Rating Limitations

Can you log dual hours as copilot of an IFR flight without an instrument rating (not a training flight/ppl PIC)?

Hi Sean,
Just another quick note on terminology:

Dual: This generally refers to flight time with an instructor providing dual instruction.

Co-pilot Time: This applies when you’re rated on the aircraft (i.e., you’ve completed the required dual training) and the aircraft actually requires a co-pilot, as specified in the Aircraft Flight Manual.

If the aircraft does not Require a co-pilot are you not allowed to log hours in the co-pilot seat even if rated (e.g. C-172)?

Morning Sean,

Great questions – keep them coming!
In aviation, it’s important to read and understand each term, and then apply it in context.
The same goes for the rules.

So, what do you think the term or rule is saying?

Cheers,
Peter
